A portable cosmic ray detector for school education

نویسندگان

چکیده

This article describes the design, assembly and characterization of a portable cosmic ray detector, developed by INSULAB group suitable for teaching activities aimed at high school students. It consists compact aluminum suitcase containing three plastic scintillator modules coupled to photomultipliers, readout custom electronics chain powered power bank. The operate in coincidence system records arrival time each particle over threshold signal module. data are acquired processed Raspberry PI connected touch screen display online monitoring. procedure implemented determination detector efficiency is reported, along with results measurements rate as function altitude zenith angle, performed laboratory different locations outdoors.

ACORDE a Cosmic Ray Detector for ALICE

ACORDE is one of the ALICE detectors, presently under construction at CERN. It consists of an array of plastic scintillator counters placed on the three upper faces of the ALICE magnet. It will act as a cosmic ray trigger, and, together with other ALICE sub-detectors, will provide precise information on cosmic rays with primary energies around 10 ÷ 10 eV. Here we describe the design of ACORDE a...

Time Delays in Cosmic Ray Propagation

Cosmic Rays (CR) travel at speeds essentially indistinguishable from the speed of light. However whilst travelling through magnetic fields, both regular and turbulent, they are delayed behind the light since they are usually charged particles and their paths are not linear. Those delays can be so long that they are an impediment to correctly identifying sources which may be variable in time. Fu...

Search for Antimatter with the AMS Cosmic Ray Detector

Antimatter search results of the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) detector are presented. About 10 triggers were collected in the 1998 precursor flight onboard space shuttle Discovery. This ten day mission exposed the detector on a 51.7◦ orbit at an altitude around 350km. Identification of charged cosmic rays is achieved by multiple energy loss and time-of-flight measurements. Bending inside t...

Compact cosmic ray detector for unattended atmospheric ionization monitoring.

Two vertical cosmic ray telescopes for atmospheric cosmic ray ionization event detection are compared. Counter A, designed for low power remote use, was deployed in the Welsh mountains; its event rate increased with altitude as expected from atmospheric cosmic ray absorption. Independently, Counter B's event rate was found to vary with incoming particle acceptance angle. Simultaneous co-located...
